Enabling Next GeneratIon NEtworks for broadcast Services (ENGINES) is a Eureka/Celtic project with contributions from more than 30 partners around Europe. The overall goal is to do research, support the standardization work and provide prototyping and testing environments for next generation of terrestrial and handheld broadcasting (DVB-T2/NGH).
The Finnish University research work will be in the area of work of the overall ENGINES project, where the main technological base is DVB-T2 and DVB-NGH standards. The project contributions are on two levels; work on architecture for current and future DVB technology, where supporting the standardization work is the focus. Secondly, the project will provide test and simulation platforms (e.g. test networks, field measurements, simulations, Software Defined Radio implementations), supporting the implementation of the standards in terminals and in the network. At the Embedded Systems lab, we contribute to the project by doing software simulations of DVB-T2 and related technologies, developing and analyzing error correcting codes and reporting to both the project and to the scientific community.
