Computer Engineering
In the Computer Engineering study program at Åbo Akademi University you will learn how to apply the principles of mathematics, engineering and computer science to develop new computer-based solutions to fulfill the needs of our modern society.
We study information technology at a broad front: from large supercomputer that are use for scientific computing to small, embedded systems where a computer is hidden within a machine. From web applications and web services that are used in business and social networks to industrial systems that are used to control and optimize technical systems. Computer Engineering includes software, hardware and how they interact with the environment.
Specialization towards the end
In the beginning of the studies, you will read common studies together with all other engineering students at Åbo Akademi, and later together with your fellow students in computer engineering. Towards the end of your studies, you will specialize in one of the subject fields Embedded Systems, Industrial Systems Engineering or Software Engineering.
- Embedded systems are computer systems which typically do only one specific task. Examples of embedded systems are mobile phones, MP3 players and ADSL routers. Embedded systems design also has to take into consideration the limitations and requirements of the hardware. The studies provide models for how to efficiently and systematically design and program embedded systems.
- Industrial Systems Engineering includes the particular difficulties, which arise when computers are used for optimization, control and regulation of technical systems. The importance of this field is increasing at the same rate as computer technology is integrated in technical processes.
- In software engineering, you learn how to build software systems in a systematic and efficient way. The studies cover how specification, design, programming methodology, testing and project leading skills are combined in order to create software systems of high quality.
- High Performance Computing considers methods for parallel programming and code optimization on supercomputers, PC-clusters and grids. It is also possible to specialize in computer graphics.
